Spring 2011 turkey season

A couple weeks into most states’ turkey season, a number of gobblers have already fallen to Wingert’s Woodworks turkey calls.

This is a nice three year old public land bird taken by Jared McJunkin, the NWTF’s Conservation Field Supervisor for the western United States. Jared is using one of my aluminum calls, and he’s singing its praises and really showing it off to the top brass at the NWTF. This bird had an 11″ beard and 1-1/4″ spurs. Nice bird Jared!

Every duck hunter should carry a whistle

Every duck hunter has a duck call, but not every duck hunter has a duck whistle. This is unfortunate because the “dreeeeeeb” of the mallard drake is an excellent confidence call for call-shy ducks that just don’t want to commit. Late in the season they can be especially effective. Many duck hunters will hang hundreds of dollars worth of calls on their lanyard, but they use a $5 whistle made of plastic.

I’ve perfected the sound from the duck whistle, and dressed them up in the finest exotic woods with striking finishes. These whistles also perfeclty imitate the sounds made by teal, pintail and widgeon.

These whistles will start below $40 depending on the wood and finish chosen by the customer. As with all my calls, they are made-to-order, fully custom.

Wingert’s Woodworks goose calls

I’m now offering goose calls, after a lot of tweaking and practicing.

This call is black acrylic with a polished stainless steel band. The insert has an aluminum “gutsert”, into which the guts are firmly seated.

Wine bottle stoppers (a little spinoff of my side business)

I made some wine bottle stoppers for friends and they were an instant hit. So I’ve been selling a few of them here and there in the last year. I use the very best solid stainless steel stopper hardware available. Unlike chromed or plated stoppers, it will not corrode in wine or vinegar, and the o-rings are designed to allow the stopper to fit a multitude of bottles. I’m partial to bourbon, and they even fit some of my bourbon bottles. Like my duck and turkey calls, I use unique and unusual woods for my stoppers…No plain old domestic hardwoods. All of my stoppers have a thick, shiny, flawless CA glue (fancy super-glue) finish, which is both durable and beautiful.

They make great host gifts at parties, paired with a bottle of wine.

Most stoppers are $25-$30 depending on the wood. Most are $25, with notable more expensive exceptions being ebony, olive, african blackwood and stabilized woods. I can be reached at wingertswoodworks@hotmail.com with inquiries.

This one is going to Matt N. in Minnesota. It is Mexican cocobolo, slate over glass. The striker is also cocobolo, with a pecan peg.

This isn’t just duck and turkey calls.

The stopper above is walnut, and has a celtic knot done with maple. Knot easy to do.

Turkey call for the Governor

My friend Keith Mark, who is the host of Macmillan River Adventures TV hunting show on the Outdoor Channel, recently asked me to make a couple calls. He’s the celebrity guide for this year’s Kansas Governor’s Annual One-Shot Turkey Hunt in El Dorado, KS, and would like to present one of my calls to the Governor. I was completely honored to have this opportunity so I had to make these calls special. Keith of course gets a call to fairly closely match the gov’s.

Here are the turkey calls that Wingert’s Woodworks was built on. I’ve been at this a relatively short time (January 2009), but my calls have been well-received by turkey hunters all over the country. Users of my calls include hunters in dozens of states, hunting industry manufacturers’ representatives and a nationally syndicated outdoor TV show’s host.

I make the calls to sound good to the birds and look good to the hunter. Anyone can go to a retail store and spend their money on a wood turkey call that sounds good. But it lacks the personal touch that I give my calls, and it certainly lacks the unique materials and craftsmanship. I work with my customers to determine the sound they’re looking for. I don’t keep any calls in stock, they’re all made to order.

The call pictured above is made from curly claro walnut. Paired with a slate surface, this is one of my most popular sellers. Walnut’s medium density makes it a very versatile material for calls that make a good range of sounds.
