A couple weeks into most states’ turkey season, a number of gobblers have already fallen to Wingert’s Woodworks turkey calls.

This is a nice three year old public land bird taken by Jared McJunkin, the NWTF’s Conservation Field Supervisor for the western United States. Jared is using one of my aluminum calls, and he’s singing its praises and really showing it off to the top brass at the NWTF. This bird had an 11″ beard and 1-1/4″ spurs. Nice bird Jared!

  1. Although it is early in the season, this is the most important picture I’ll post all season. I donated a call to a wounded warrior turkey hunt for an organization called QIMSA (Quantico Injured Military Sportsman Association). QIMSA is based at USMC base Quantico, VA. They pull injured Marines from the hospital and get them out into the field in an effort to help them get back on their feet and enjoy the outdoors….A break from the harsh reality of rehabilitation from life-altering injuries.
The man on the left, a retired Marine, guided this particular young Marine’s hunt. The Marine that facilitated my donation quoted this young man as saying “sir, I get cold easily because my body is half titanium.” He toughed it out without his crutches and was able to take a nice bird. I’m completely humbled by this young man’s sacrifice and service, I’m thrilled that he was able to take a bird, and it was my honor to provide a call that I hope scratches the surface of my appreciation of what he has given.
